  • When should I apply?

In order to meet the priority deadlines, students applying for a semester program should start their applications no later than one full semester ahead of time. The priority deadline is March 1 for the Fall program and October 1 for the Spring program. Students wishing to apply after the priority deadlines should contact CUAbroad. Applications will be accepted on a space-available basis. Application deadlines for short-term programs will vary, and students should consult the program page. It is recommended that they start their applications at least 2 weeks before the application deadline.

  • Who is eligible?

Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and be in good academic and disciplinary standing. Additional requirements may apply depending on the program. For more information, view the general Eligibility Criteria. Students wishing to apply for an exemption should contact CUAbroad.

  • Will my grades transfer?

Yes. The courses you take in Rome are regular Catholic University courses. You sign up for them in Cardinal Station, and the grades and credit are entered into your student account just like normal.

  • Do I need to know Italian before I go?

Students do not need any Italian language background for the Rome semester programs. Eligibility criteria for short-term programs can vary, and students should check the "Eligibility" section of the program page.

Unless they are already fluent in Italian, all students are required to take Italian language during the semester Rome program.

  • Can I under/over-elect?

Although five courses is the recommended load for a semester in Rome, students may choose to over- or under-elect so long as they receive the normal permissions that would be required to do so on Catholic University's main campus.

Students attending the semester program may choose to live either in the dorms or with a host family. Students living with a host family will receive a richer, deeper cultural experience. Students living in the dorms may find it more difficult to integrate into Italian culture and society. Students on short-term programs must live in the Rome dorms. View the Rome accommodations page for more information on your housing options.

  • How much will it cost?

Students pay tuition plus a program fee. The program fee can vary by program; students are encouraged to review the "Costs" section of the program page. Financial aid and scholarships will continue to apply as for a normal term

  • Are there scholarships available?

You should contact CUAbroad for more information. All students may apply for scholarships, either through CUAbroad or through an outside scholarship foundation. Students are advised to research scholarship opportunities at least a year in advance, as many have early application deadlines.

A student visa is required for any program lasting over 90 days in length.
